KB24, LB23, CP3..

If you are a basketball fanatics, these should not be unfamiliar to you. They are the top NBA players in the world currently. Being in Singapore would not allow you to watch the NBA live in action. But fear not.. Cause....

ASEAN Basketball League (ABL) is here.

Basketball is the second largest sports in the world and it is starting to catch up in the Asia region. With the ABL just been launched on 1st October 2009, the league currently consists of teams from Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Brunei, and of course, Singapore. The teams would play in a home and away league format and ending with a playoff for the top 4 teams.

With 11 games into the season, the Singapore Slingers is behind leader Philippine Patriots by just 4 points with a game yet to play. In addition, the highlight of this season's Slingers are the inclusion of more local players. This would make us have a sense of related-ness to the Slingers as they are, indeed, a Singapore team represented by Singapore players.

So come on down and support the Singapore Slingers if you are in town during the league period from October to February every year. Even if you are not a hoop fan, you can still come on down to watch a game of hoops. You might actually fall in love with the game. =)

All Slingers home game would held in the Singapore Indoor Stadium. For more information on the Singapore Slingers schedule or the ABL, visit the following:

Shooting sports in Singapore

Airsoft Asia BB (pellet) Gun shooting in Singapore. This sport allows people of all ages to experience what it’s like to shoot a gun, although it is a pellet gun, the looks, weight and recoil is extremely realistic. The weapons used in this sport are so real, most are unable to spot the difference between the real and the replica. There is a wide variety of weapons to choose from.

Airsoft Asia requires more from a person that just knowing how to shoot, it requires speed, accuracy, stamina and power from the player. The player/ shooter are required to run a course filled with different types of targets, stationary, moving and flipping targets. Faced with this, they are to put their training into action and face the targets by implementing what they have been taught, and as every course is different, they would have to think of creative ways to complete the course. In practical shooting, not only are the shooter's skills and equipment put to the test, a large part in performing lies his mental strength. It helps the shooter to execute a game plan correctly, deal with internal stress and handle external pressure. To perform to the highest level of his current ability, the shooter will need to learn to disregard the environment and its influences to complete the courses of fires smoothly with minor or even no errors.

Location of sport-Sembawang Community Club- Seng kang Community Club *(membership is required to join the club)
For more information about the sport visit: http://www.airsoftasia.com/

Other related sport is the air rifle club, whereby a shooter only has to hit a stationary target down a shooting range, using an air rifle that requires the shooter to reload after each shot is taken.
In this sport, player/shooters are not given situations similar to those of airsoft Asia, all is required of them is to shoot down a range one pellet at a time to hit the target. Although it may sound easy, it is harder than most think as they weapon used is relatively heavy and hard to handle, skill is involved when it comes to this sport. Location of Sport-Bukit Batok Clubhouse For more information about the sport visit: http://www.hometeamns.sg/index.cfm?GPID=59

Opinion On both Sports
After trying out both sports, I would recommend that people give Airsoft Asia a try, it really test every skill that you have as you only have mere seconds to engage the targets and planning is involved before each shot is taken. As for air rifle, not a lot of skill is needed in taking down to targets at hand. And although Airsoft Asia is more expensive as compared to air rifle, the skills you learn are really priceless. Well don’t take my word for it, go on, give it a try, I’m sure many of you would like it.
Sporting Events here in Singapore.
Sunday, December 20, 2009 @ 9:02 PM

One of the most anticipated event for many racing fans was the Singapore first ever night race which attracted a staggering number of tourist from all over the world. This race made history for Singapore as not only was it the first ever night race, it was one of the first few major events that took place here in Singapore.

Screaming and yelling fans filled the seats alongside the track. With anticipation and excitement, they waited for the green light. The roar of the engines was mind blasting, it really took my breath away, it was like nothing I had ever hear, what you see and hear on television is nothing compared to the real deal, it is much louder and the adrenalin is really pumping in your blood stream.

Aside from that, the construction of the track and the lightings cost hundreds of millions of dollars to construct. The lightings were so good that it almost gave a day time feel to the whole atmosphere.

Opinion on Event

I feel that this event is something not to be missed, if you are a race fan and have only watch the races through your television, my suggestion is to get off that couch and come on down to Singapore Night race, the experience you feel there is completely different from what you would get from your home television even with all those fancy sound systems, because when it come to the real thing, nothing comes close.

Run! Run! Run!

The Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon is an international event held annually on the first Sunday of December in the city of Singapore. This annual event attracted more than 50,000 participants this year, from countries like Kenya, China, England, Ethiopia, South Africa, Sweden, Russia and many more. The marathon has been declared as an IAAF Silver Label Road Race and is televised around the world. The event has 4 categories to compete in, namely the full marathon, half marathon, 10km run and 10km wheelchair race. Also, there is a 750m kid’s dash for children, so everyone is included in the fun.

This year, I went for the 42.195km run, or the full marathon. It was extremely exhilarating and also inspiring, was I would be running along-side literally thousands of people from around the globe. Everywhere I looked, I could see the many diverse races converging together, with one common goal.

The Padang, where the SCSM is held at, allows one to enjoy the Singapore CBD skyline while taking part in the numerous activities

Me, finally finishing one of the toughest, but enjoyable events held in our island-country, Singapore.

I would say that this is one of the shining moments of Singapore's sporting effort as it started out as a small race, but has become an internationally known event which the world knows. It showcases the country as a global sports hub, where everyone of different nationality, race and culture can come together as one.

Forest Adventure Grand Course
Like or ever desire the experience of climbing up a tree and swinging from one tree to another tree 5 metres above the ground? If the answer is yes, then come now to the natural environment of Bedok Reservoir Park to experience this one of a kind experience. Situated along the banks of the reservoir park, the forest adventure grand course has 32 different stages including a 12m Tarzan swing where you would get a chance to jump from a 7.4m platform and swing into a rope net 2m below, giving you a chance to put yourself into the shoes of the famous Disney character Tarzan.

It also includes a 65m section comprising seven different bridges. It is also fully equipped with swings, ladders, bridges, nets and trapezes that lead you from the starting point to the ending point. However, to reach the ending point, you are needed to overcome some high elements and adrenaline-rushed obstacles.

I am personally a resident leaving near the area and I go to the park for my weekly jogs every weekend and even without trying, just by standing below the obstacles and watching tourists doing it, it gives me an urge to be up there trying out the high elements obstacles and its seems so fun and cool. As I participate in OBS and camps in my CCA National Police Cadet Corps, there are high ropes elements course in the camps and I enjoyed it very much, however, this one is much different than those which I have tried before in terms of their surrounding and the range of obstacles they have. The best thing about this forest adventure course is that it ends with you taking the ‘Flying Fox’, a Zip-line across the most unimaginable surface, the surface of the water at the reservoir, the very first in the world and at 176m long, can you imagine the adrenaline rush which you are going to experience when you zip your way across the surface of the water at the park?

Kid course is also available and thus it’s an activity for your whole family regardless of your age from children to adults.

For those worry about the safety level at the course, here’s something to calm all your worries. At the course, all participants would be equipped with safety gears like helmet and safety harnesses attached to the safety line and before the start of the course, there would be well trained instructor giving you a thorough brief on what everyone is suppose to do so do pay attention. After the briefing, participants can now start attempting to overcome the obstacles and moving through unaccompanied that would give you an additional adrenaline boost with the instructors below you giving you the instructions and assistance which you need. In addition to that, there would be signage describing the activity with the instructions on the ways to navigate through the obstacles and the tip to complete it fast. The facilities are inspected and maintained regularly and lightning protection is installed to ensure the high level of safety.

Therefore do not worry and go over now to Bedok Reservoir Park to try out the exciting and adrenaline-rushed forest adventure course. Here’s one comment from the instructor there, ‘Like all height courses, it looks easy from the ground, but once you are up there, it’s going to be different.’ For all those adventure seekers out there, here’s one built for you. Come and approach and overcome your fear!
Unsuitable for people with height phobia!!!

Via Ferrata wall@ Orchard Central

Ever experience rock climbing on a 5 story high wall within a shopping mall? The idea sounds mad and the fact that you being suspended in mid-air on a 5 story high wall, scary aren’t it? but it has become something true after BorderX, a joint venture between two sports climbing gyms, Singapore’s climb Asia and Malaysia camp 5 introduced Asia’s first ever indoor rock climbing wall in new orchard central mall. Feeling excited already? There’s more to come. The via ferrata wall is unlike the common rock climbing wall facilities which you see, unlike a common rock climbing wall, it makes use of fixed cables, steples and climbing hold to assist climbers up the wall.

An even more unique point is that unlike normal rock climbing whereby you scale the wall individually, in this rock climbing, it’s about team effort whereby you would be attached to a few other people, most likely 4 to scale up the unique wall together. Thus it doesn’t matter if you are a fast climber or not, you need teamwork and be mindful of your climbing mates below you. To further let you guys understand the experience of climbing it, I carried out an interview with my friend, Xuan Wei who have experience it beforehand. He mention to me that like normal rock climbing, your safety gear must be on and stress that you shouldn’t rush on your way up because to scale this unique wall, you need to climb slowly and steadily as you need to be mindful of your climbing mates who might be lagging behind and that further drains your strength if you rush up.

He said that after he climbed the first few steps fast, he felt that his arm had little strength left and till the halfway mark, it’s totally about your determination and willpower to scale this wall and conquer it. You wouldn’t want to let your climbing mates down by falling and giving up he said. Therefore you would need to pay attention to the briefing or pay the price.=) For those wandering for your safety, the cutting edge belay system makes it impossible for you to fall so do not worry about it and enjoy the whole adrenaline-rushed experience. Thus, for those seeking for adventures/sports, this is one full of adrenaline rush for you.
Not suitable for people with phobia of heights!!!

Additional information: the Via Ferrata wall opens daily from 12pm – 8pm. Tickets are priced at $30 on weekdays and $35 on weekends. Visit http://www.borderx.com.sg/ for more details.
Youth Olympic Games 2010, Singapore
Wednesday, December 2, 2009 @ 5:31 PM

Having successfully organised and held the 1st Asian Youth Games in 2009, Singapore would once again be catching the World's attention in 2010.

THE 1ST EVER SUMMER YOUTH OLYMPIC GAMES
(14th - 26th August 2010)

" A picture speaks a thousand words". So here is a quick video to provide some details on the host country, Singapore and the various sporting events/ venues.

The vision of the YOG is to inspire young people around the world to participate in sport and adopt and live by the Olympic values. I feel that Singapore have played her part in fulfilling the vision by the construction of her 1st Singapore Sports School in 2004. The school aimed to provide the best academic and sports facilities for youth who aspires to be an athlete. The school would also hold some of the events during the games.

By hosting these games, people all over the world would be able to visit to watch the games lives. In the process, they would also be able to learn more about the cultures and practices of Singapore. It is indeed "killing two birds with one stone."

In addition, through these games, our very own young athlete can interact and exchange pointers from the World's best. This would no doubt, improve our sportsman future in the area of sports.

If you are a sports fanatic, what are you waiting for? Come on down next August, meet Lyo and Merly and feel the adrenaline rush LIVE.

SINGAPORE WELCOMES YOU!!!

Paintball!
Saturday, November 28, 2009 @ 10:00 PM

Itching to be like those soldiers you see in war movies? Have a high tolerance for pain? Able to think fast while on your feet? If you have the above qualities, paintball is the sports for you!

Available at Turf City (Bukit Timah), Tactical Action Games (TAG) Paintball is the place where one can have a fun time shooting opponents with paintballs. Paintball was brought to Singapore since 1999 by TAG Paintball. The whole concept about paintball is to accomplish ‘missions’ while trying to take down as many opponents as possible by shooting them. Think "Counter-Strike"-like in real-life and you would get the idea.

You crouch behind a tin drum, waiting for your team-mate’s signal. Suddenly, ‘Ping!’ a paintball smashes into the tin drum you were hiding behind, sending splatters of paint pass your face. Next moment, you hear paintballs whizzing through the air. The fight is on!

The objective of the game is to shoot two targets in the opponents’ base camp, then capture your ammo box and bring it back to your own base camp without being shot. If you are shot, you will have to raise your gun above your head and run towards your halfway house, make a U-turn and continue playing. Being shot will also guarantee you a bruise (if the paintball hits a non-armored part of your body) and a blow to your ego.

But, do not fret! Paintball is not just about the bruising, as with every shot fired brings an adrenaline rush through your veins. The game is so exciting that everyone runs and jumps about constantly.

If you are a safety conscience person, do not worry as it is mandatory to wear specially designed helmets and chest protectors that will ensure that you go home in one piece.

Pasir Ris new Eco-sports Hall
Monday, November 23, 2009 @ 11:52 PM

A new sports hall will be built in Pasir Ris by June, 2011. This sports hall will have at least five ‘green’ features, more than the conventional sports hall with only two or three. These ‘green’ features include solar panels to save energy, plant-covered walls to cool the building and a rainwater- harvesting system to trap water that can be used to water plants, just to name a few.
The sports hall will also feature international-standard volleyball courts, swimming pools, tennis courts, a 2000 capacity multi-purpose hall and a dance studio, together with F&B outlets and shops. This sports hall will be a good place for the people in Pasir Ris to relax after a long day’s work.

As talks to fight global-warming carries on in Copenhagen, Singapore does a practical action by building this eco-friendly sports complex as a kick start to Singapore’s commitment to fighting global warming. This sports complex does not only serve as a venue for city dwellers like Singaporeans to exercise and relax, it can also serve as a competition venue for local and international sporting events with its international-sized courts.

As Pasir Ris do not have much facilities for the shopaholics, the shops and retail outlets in this sports complex can also serve as a place for these shopaholics to ‘hunt’, allowing the sports complex to kill three birds with one stone.

With the erection of this new sports complex, residents in Pasir Ris can exercise, relax and shop in an environment that is not harmful to the environment, which is a good start to making Singapore a ‘greener’ city to live in.
